The bee microbiota under study

Philipp Engel's laboratory at the University of Lausanne specializes in the study of interactions between the gut microbiota and its host, the bee. This microbiota is stable and composed of around ten different species of bacteria. To study this particular ecosystem, scientists collect pupae from the campus apiary: these 3-week-old juveniles have the advantage of not possessing intestinal flora.
