Children of the closet

Six million seasonal workers came to work from Switzerland between 1945 and 2002. These men and women were legally forbidden to bring their children with them. Many Italians, Spaniards and Portuguese still brought their offspring illegally. Other children remained in the country, looked after by an aunt, uncle or grandparents while their parents worked in Switzerland. These boys and girls who had to remain hidden were called "closet children".
