Conservatives win German parliamentary elections, extreme right makes historic breakthrough

The conservatives led by Friedrich Merz have won Germany's parliamentary elections, ahead of the far-right AfD party, which achieved the best score in its history and a result unseen for Germany's far right since the end of the Second World War.
