How humanitarianism has become a pillar of Swiss identity

Switzerland has made humanitarianism its trademark. So much so that its flag often merges with that of the Red Cross. Why did Switzerland, a small, poor country in the 19th century, set out to care for the weak? What benefits does the Confederation derive from its humanitarian action?
