Leap year, from the stars to reality

In what are known as "leap years", an extra day is added to the Gregorian calendar's usual month of February. Yet there's a scientific reason for its existence: leap years, which recur every 4 years or so, are linked to astronomical phenomena, like the autumnal equinox and summer solstice.
