Living without a bank account: legal but complicated

In Switzerland, an employee can very well decide to do without a bank account. Salaries are paid from hand to hand, and payments are made using payment slips. But how can you save without entrusting your money to a bank? And is cash money really more sustainable, less harmful to the planet than banking transactions carried out remotely, via a dʹe-banking system?
