According to federal archives, the Swiss presence in Algeria represented around 2,000 people at the start of the national liberation war. As a child, Abdelmadjid Sana would discreetly listen in on conversations about the Fellaghas, the independence fighters, and read La Dépêche de Constantine. In the 50s, he discovered the extent of the resistance movement. He noted that tension was mounting between supporters of the French government and its opponents.
