Ukraine: why is fighting intensifying in the east?

Conquest of Donetsk airport, shelling of the city of Marioupol, encirclement of the town of Debaltsevo northeast of Donetsk... For the past few days, pro-Russian separatists have clearly been on the offensive in eastern Ukraine. How are we to understand this clear resumption of hostilities, ten months after the start of the conflict?
