Why do we prefer lower voices?

The RTS sometimes receives compliments on "beautiful deep voices" on the air. And in 2008, English research developed a mathematical formula to determine the "perfect" voice, which approximated those of actresses and actors such as Judi Dench or Alan Rickman. But do we really tend to prefer deep voices? What does our brain associate with them?
