Why so many caesarean sections in Switzerland?

In Switzerland, a third of children are born by Caesarean section. A rate well above the 10% to 15% recommended by the World Health Organization. The C-section rate is even higher in German-speaking Switzerland and in private clinics. How can these figures be explained? Are these scalpel births a matter of choice or medical necessity? And what is the experience of the women who give birth?
