Don't touch my accent!

The word "accent" comes from the Latin ad cantum (for song). For a long time, accents in French-speaking Switzerland were so lilting that you could guess people's villages of origin just by listening to them speak. Today, accents are tending to fade away in favor of more "neutral" speech, influenced in particular by the audiovisual media. Where have the accents gone? How can we preserve their memory?
