The dreaded fire ant lands in Europe

The fire ant, native to South America, is one of the worldʹs worst invasive species. In less than a century, it has invaded the USA, Mexico, the Caribbean, China, Taiwan and Australia. A study published in the journal Current Biology reports its recent arrival in Europe. 88 fire ant nests have been identified in the Syracuse region of Sicily, and this is not good news for the Old Continent.
