Mammalian coat evolution

The dull, dark coat of the first mammals over 150 million years ago probably served as camouflage. The spots and stripes we know today only appeared later in mammal evolution. To confirm this, scientists analyzed the hairs of 6 fossils for their melanosomes, small structures containing pigments.
