What exactly do we mean by "humanitarian"?

Lʹhumanitarianism is receiving more and more media coverage and, at times, criticism. What exactly do we mean by "humanitarian"? Is it always an approach based on compassion and help? What are the reasons that make us want to help others, here or elsewhere?
