What is marital duty?

Conjugal duty, the idea that regular sex is expected, when you're in a relationship. Is it just a social injunction? In France, it also exists on a legal level: if a person refuses, on a long-term basis, to have sex with their husband or wife, they can be found at fault by a court. At least, this was the case until France was recently condemned by the European Court of Human Rights.
