What is a "species"?

How is it that from one starting species, individuals diverge to the point of splitting into two - three, four, even more! - dʹspecies? To date, scientists have identified over 2 million species, and there are surely millions more yet to be discovered. How is this incredible diversity possible? How is a "species" defined?
