Twenty years ago, absinthe became legal again in Switzerland, after almost a century of prohibition. The green fairy had its heyday, celebrated by the bourgeoisie and poets, before being accused of causing madness and degeneracy. What is less well known is the importance that the French colonies - notably Algeria - had in the development and downfall of absinthe.
